Revelations is here!

At long, long last, Revelations has arrived! Tech issues resolved! The birth process of this book was more challenging than either of the other two books, but in some ways, it is also more of a celebration for me, since the journey toward the release of the book was so much more challenging than I expected. Now, I can rest and celebrate its arrival.

For those of you who have been following the course of Tamara’s life, this book represents a continuation of the other two—the story is Tamara’s continuing journey—but it also represents a depth that I have never gone to in my other two stories. These people whose lives I’ve had the privilege to write about have experiences that I don’t always share, or even really understand, at times. I feel their frustration, fear, love and joys, but their experiences don’t always resonate with me personally. This book, which was difficult for me to write, resonated with me very deeply as Tamara experiences some of the most intense experiences of her life. I was forced to experience one of the most pivotal—and powerful—experiences in my life as I wrote. It wasn’t easy, but it brought me levels of understanding and freedom I did not expect when I began the journey. I don’t know what it will bring those of you who read it, but I hope it touches you as it did me.

I begin again at the start of the writing process: the creative phase, where I write lots and lots of book starts with an eye to finding out where the next steps in the continuing story of Azelle go. I don’t know yet exactly where Book Four is going to take us. We may follow Tamara directly, or see her at a remove as we follow one of the other people who populate this world—even despite the November writing month, the creative process is so very fluid right now. I’ve got more possibilities about what might happen, but no firm path to follow yet. Divine timing at play once again, and this time, I’d like to believe I can be patient as I enjoy these beginning stages of the creative process. We’ll see how that goes.

In the meantime, enjoy the new installation in the story of Azelle and the continuation of Tamara’s journey in Revelations: Book Three of the Azellian Affairs! You can access the Amazon version of the book on the book page of my website or in the link below:

In the meantime, I’ve gotten lots of questions from readers about why relationships played out the way they did in the first two books: Alawahea and Triangle. Here’s a sneak peek (and Spoiler Alert if you have never read either Alawahea or Triangle). If you have never read either book, please be sure to read those two books first! If spoilers don’t bother you, or if you have already read the books, then feel free to read on:

**************************************************************************************************************

Why was Alarin and Tamara's relationship so uneasy? They had a bond, right? Didn’t that mitigate the tension between them?

Among Azellians, and particularly those from the High Council families, Awakening is an overwhelming, intense and sometimes even traumatic experience. It can sometimes lead to very intense relationships, but by their very nature, the intensity burns out and often goes cold fairly quickly unless constantly re-ignited. Based almost entirely on hormones and very little on actual compatibility, once that intensity flares and fades, there is little left to raise if one does not have a genuine connection to the other such as shared interests or common ground on which to build something long term. To Azellians, bonds such as those between Alarin and Tamara—and even Merran and Tamara—are constricting, frustrating and to be avoided at all cost. Once a bond is formed, both partners will often chip away at it until it disappears. The deeper the bond, the more the instinctive response is to get away from it, or damage it until it is destroyed. Azellians will take on sexual partners, sometimes as life mates, but they do not believe that one’s self should ever be subsumed into another.

Why did Tamara and Merran’s relationship fall apart? They seemed so good together!

Tamara and Merran’s relationship is deeply unbalanced. To Tamara, Merran is a mentor more than a lover. Her Awakening freed so many suppressed and confused emotions about love, sex and being out of control, that many of her feelings for Merran are more like gratitude and a crush. What was between them was never meant to last. Their personalities do not truly mesh and they are in very different places in their lives. Tamara knows this and though she doesn’t consciously break it off, she draws closer to Alarin as Merran withdraws from her, and the relationship between herself and Merran falls apart. To Merran, Tamara is not a lover, partner or confidante. For a time, he does entertain the idea of being her lover, and he does care deeply about her—more deeply than he knows—but their relationship is not meant to last in that form. Instead, the birth of Rashella allowed the child to be their bridge so they can forge a friendship built over shared responsibilities for their daughter.

Why did Alarin, Tamara and Merran never function well as a unit?

While polyamory and open relationships are common on Azelle, with many people living in multiple combinations of many types, for Tamara it is so far outside her comfort zone that she subconsciously sabotages it. Alarin comes from a family who does not accept same sex pairings, and Merran is not particularly drawn to men, so the relationship between the three of them functions less as a partnership and more as a competition. That combination does not make for a long lasting relationship.

Will Merran ever find a lover?

I ask the same question over and over myself. I don’t know yet. I think so—I would like to think so—but we’ll have to find out together.

Will there ever be justice for Justern?

Justern’s experience leads to some very powerful growth for him. Does he heal? Yes. And he finds a new, deeper and very loving relationship that perfectly fits him. If that is what you mean by justice, then yes, he does find justice. If you mean does he get revenge? If the best revenge is to live well, far beyond any hurt the other can do to him, then, yes, he gets revenge. His story may even one day end up in a book or books of his very own.

Why did Tamara end up with Alarin instead of Merran?

Their relationship was much more equal and they each have something to learn from each other. There is a very deep soul contract that is going to play out between them. Book 3, Revelations, explores that in more depth.

Review: The Handmaid's Tale on Hulu

For the past couple of weeks, I have been watching The Handmaid’s Tale on Hulu. My reaction to it is interesting: despite some strong mixed feelings about whether or not I like the story, there is something very powerful about the storyline, a deeply resonant thread that keeps me coming back despite an often unpleasant visceral response and yes, sometimes a sarcastic “Really?!? Seriously?!” thrown at the screen when certain things happen. For the past two weeks, as I’ve watched the show, I observed and listened and finally have realized just what I am perceiving: the storyline is so very timely in this era of #MeToo and the lashing out of the shadow that lurks in all of us. It is giving voice to a powerful, terrifying rage that haunts our psyche. The Handmaid’s Tale on Hulu is an unabashed exploration of that shadow, an unapologetic imaging of the suppressed feminine rage that whispers (or screams) in all of our heads. How we react to that rage varies depending on our upbringing, gender and level of energetic awareness, but we all know the fundamental rage quite well—and The Handmaid’s Tale on Hulu unashamedly illustrates it.

Hope lingers that there will be some happiness to be found along the way in the story—and there sort of is—but the question becomes how much of ourselves will we allow to be consumed by the shadow? To heal something, one must fully feel it, and one of the ways we do that is to witness with compassion even the strongest and lethal shadows there are. But how far is too far? Will seeking to claim vengeance in an effort to lance the pain ease the rage? And if it does, how deeply does one dive into the storm? Will it take over and fundamentally change us for the worst? These are all deeper questions posed by the television show.

Interestingly, The Handmaid’s Tale, as written by Margaret Atwood, is very different, a warning of what lurks in the shadows, not a full-on wading or swimming in the darkness. The show doesn't even pretend that it is speaking about anything but vengeance: we watch the question get asked again and again through multiple characters on the show.

Why such a difference between the two? Here is my perception in this moment: this television adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s novel on Hulu has a very different timing than the book Margaret Atwood wrote: the #MeToo movement is very much here, reminding us that though we have come a distance compared to the 80’s when the book was published, there remains yet quite a distance to go. When Margaret Atwood wrote the story, the rage was very much there, but the changing times had not yet started to bring the pain, the violations and the rage to the surface yet. This iteration of the timeless classic is giving voice to something that has been bubbling to the surface for a very long time, and although violent vengeance is not something I personally choose as a response most of the time, I have very definitely felt that rage on occasion. It lurks in all of us, waiting to be seen, to be acknowledged. Not forgiven or ignored, just witnessed.

Although the show is fictional, the themes in the show are very real and very relevant. It speaks to everyone—men and women alike, albeit in different ways—and it leaves a mark. People may hate or love it, but very much like the shadow it is expressing, the show wants to be seen. The shadow that the show reflects simply wants to be known. This show does a beautiful job of stripping all the “glory” of that shadow away. Vengeance is ugly. The acts that created the pain that lead to it are visceral and ugly. However, humanity is capable of great evil AND great good. In the end, no hero is uni-dimensional. No villain appears out of thin air without facets. And no one has the answers—there are only different paths, some of which are more or less painful than others, but they all have the right to be heard. The long domination of the toxic masculine is coming to an end, and healing arrives—but to heal the hurt one has to feel the hurt. This show is brutal, agonizing and may never heal. It poses the question: what if we never heal? Is that okay? That’s yet another question without an answer, and we can only face it with compassion for ourselves and those of us who are lost in the darkness.

There is at least one more season coming. Will I watch it? Maybe. I am a sucker for a series, and there are some bright gems sprinkled through the show that have me curious to see if they will germinate (and yes, I personally want to see redemption for the characters, the story and the world), but at the same time, the show is as it is. It is dark, but it gives a brilliant voice to our own torments through characters who are struggling with the same questions we are. Can we heal and release that pain that has dominated our lives for generations? Is that darkness all there is, or does there remain light in our lives? Is it only about revenge? What toll does revenge take on who we are and those we love? How are we going to live our lives in the future once that revenge has played out? Do we take responsibility, or continue to spread blame? What is the difference?

After all, the light is real, but so is the darkness. There is no hiding from it, no pretending that it doesn’t exist any more. And maybe just maybe, that’s okay. As my favorite Rumi poem says,

This being human is a guest house.

Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness

Some momentary awareness comes

As an unexpected visitor

Welcome and entertain them all!

Even if they are a crowd of sorrows

Who violently sweep your house

Empty of its furniture.

Still, treat each guest honorably.

They may be clearing you out

For some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,

Meet them at the door laughing,

And invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,

Because each has been sent,

As a guide from beyond.

The world in which we find ourselves today seems to be wreathed by shadow. I invite the shadow in, I see it, respect it and acknowledge it while knowing that we are, at the core, still beautiful, still light and still loved. I see the fear, the rage and the deep despair that The Handmaids Tale does so well at illuminating and I embrace all those parts of me that resonate with it. We are here to witness a fundamental shift in the human psyche and if it hurts in the healing, I know from personal experience that fully accepting the hurt for what it is and allowing it to be present within me to the fullest, changes the pain into something else. What that pain becomes, is unique to each of us, but for me, the other side of pain feels so peaceful, so restful, so flowing. It feels like being cradled by water, floating weightless in space. In those quiet spaces between the raging waves of pain and violence, I have seen glimpses of other possibilities so truly beautiful, they take my breath away. Those possibilities represent a freedom and expansion that lead to true nirvana.

Am I willing to step out of the darkness, to love the parts of me that resonate with it? YES. I’m willing to love with such ferocity that even those parts of me mired in darkness feel it. Am I willing to shift perspective so deeply that I can feel both heaven and hell and remain rooted in the divine NOW? Yes. And so I can watch The Handmaid’s Tale with a sense of deep compassion for not just the characters who are in so much pain, but myself and the world around me as well.

Alawahea—it is as it was, is and will be and Kyanalira—divine love be with us all. And so it is.

Revelations Update

Today I reviewed the layout design of Revelations and started to get excited. It is coming together! We have some stylistic changes to make, but it’s really starting to take shape. And perhaps the funniest part: I got utterly sucked into the story. I was SUPPOSED to be looking at the overall design (no editing allowed) but then I just read a sentence. Then another one, then another one, then suddenly I’m reading the story. Again. Considering I wrote it, you’d think that I wouldn’t get sucked in. But yet … I did. I have no idea if that means anything about the story, but it sure was fun. I’m falling in love with yet another Azellian.

Facing the Real—Update on Book 3

Facing the Real—Update on Book 3

Book 3 of The Azellian Affairs continues to challenge me. I have received the first edit back from the editor, and with her usual sensitivity and grace, she has shown me the places I have refused to face the depths of my characters and the story I am telling. One of those biggest questions: Who is Alarin Raderth? One of the characters in the Tamara character arc I am currently exploring with The Azellian Affairs, Alarin is a mysterious, blank character that I haven’t tried to connect with in any deep or meaningful way—not like I have with Merran, or even Tamara herself.

Into The Scary - Perspective on Halloween

Into The Scary - Perspective on Halloween

All Hallow’s Eve—a non-religious holiday that has become quite celebrated in our American culture. Doing a quick search as to the roots of the holiday, one explanation by the History Channel that I found connects it to the All Soul’s Day’s parades in England, a time period in the past when people thought that ghosts of the dead could cross back into the land of the living and be observed by those who had not yet passed on. This made me think about Azelle, the planet that I have been exploring since I was twelve, and wonder what they would think about the concept of ghosts. Are there ghosts on Azelle? If so, do they interact with the living? As always when I have questions, I went back to Merran Corina, character in my book and my contact for all things Azellian and asked.

Holidays on the Planet of Azelle

Holidays on the Planet of Azelle

I received a question recently about holidays on Azelle, the planet I am slowly revealing to Earth. Honestly, I didn’t know the answer, so I decided to ask one of my main connections to the world of Azelle. This interaction is a result of that query.

Me: Hey, Merran…

Holiday Musings

Holiday Musings

The 4th of July is almost upon us, and I found myself thinking about the holiday and just what this particular holiday is all about. This one is a commemoration of a very important event to us, culturally—the day we have earmarked as our "Independence Day”, a date in history that marked our official separation from England, and the formation of a new country. It’s a marker of our identity as a country, as well as an excuse to get a day or two off from work.

The Other Side of the Rainbow: Book 2 Update!

It’s been a while since my last post—but the good news is, editing is finally done on book 2! It officially has a title, too, and is going to be called Triangle: Book Two of the Azellian Affairs. Within the next month or so, we will be moving from editing to production, which means we should see a finalized book in the next few months—maybe even before summer!

Climbing Another Mountain: The Journey of Writing a Sequel

It’s been months since my last blog post, as I have been completely and totally buried in editing my second novel. When I began this journey to publication years ago, I had thought the biggest mountain to climb was getting published in the first place. While, yes, that was a challenge requiring courage and support, little did I know that the process of editing a sequel was going to be quite so vigorous.

Remembering the Editing Process -- Take Two

Much like childbirth, one forgets the pain—and utter joy—of any huge creative endeavor. I don’t know what other artists feel like, but it is a mix of emotions that face me as I get the first edit of Book 2 back from the editor and see what she has to say.

Who would I cast in a movie of Alawahea?

As I have been touring different blogs, doing interviews, having my book reviewed, putting up excerpts, I have discovered that the most important part about being an author—something I never imagined when the sometimes schizophrenic voice inside my head was insisting I HAD to publish the stories bubbling around in my psyche—is the readers. There is a magic that happens between an author’s creation and the readers who enjoy it. This has been one of the biggest gifts that I’ve gotten with my blog tour for Alawahea. Another gift is the fun questions that are asked in the interviews. One I had the most fun with: who would you have play your characters if your book was ever made into a movie? I really had no idea who I would pick, yet as I thought about that question, I realized I had some very strong opinions about it.

Tamara Carrington: Felicity Jones. She’s got a very sweet, gentle quality and is quietly pretty. And I’ve really enjoyed the movies I’ve seen her in!

Alarin Raderth: Alex O’Laughlin. Ever since I saw him in Moonlight, I have had a fascination for his stage presence. Although he’s not a redhead, he’s the perfect combination of supreme self-confidence and charm that I see in Alarin.

Merran Corina: Francois Arnaud. He’s got the sheer sexual presence to pull off Merran Corina. His performance in The Borgia’s, was perfect. Before he wandered too far into the realms of extreme ruthlessness that was Cesare Borgia, that is. Merran has that streak, too, and could go there. He just doesn’t show it very often.

Greg Tenricth: Michael Stahl-David. I loved his performance in the movie “In Your Eyes”. His gentle, but strong support of the person he cared about and the willingness to support his own viewpoint to the point of not caring what the rest of society thinks is very much Greg.

Justern Memaxthal: This one took me a while, but considering I was huge fan of Moonlight, and then wandered into Veronica Mars as I worked backward and explored Jason Dohring roles. Logan from Veronica Mars is very much Justern in many ways, although Justern came into being in the early 90’s, long before I’d ever seen Veronica Mars.

Mellis Mennak: This one, too, took me a while. One of my very good friends, Alissa Barry, is actually the perfect Mellis. But if we have to go with actors, I’d say I haven’t quite found the perfect Mellis. There are lots of quality actresses I think are awesome, but I have yet to find one that I say yes, that’s Mellis to. At least not yet!

What does your imagination conjure up for actors to play these roles? Let’s have some fun and cast our very own version of The Azellian Affairs…

An Interview with Merran Corina

A wonderful fellow author, Melissa Kline, suggested that I play with having characters talk to me through an interview. The first character I chose is also the most intense of my characters. Merran Corina swept me away when I first started writing about him, and he still does. We have been through many adventures together…I am so excited to have them finally out there interacting with everyone!    Sara: It’s been a while since we sat down and talked, hasn’t it? I’ve missed you.

Merran: We’re here now, aren’t we? Let’s chat. This is supposed to be an interview. We’ve done lots and lots of those, haven’t we?

Sara: Yes, we certainly have. You’re a camera hog, you know.

Merran (laughs): When did you figure that out?

Sara: The day you walked onto the pages of the first book and took over. The first book was not supposed to be about you, you know. You were originally a very marginal character.  Someone who was a distant figure….the Azellian ambassador who loomed over everything but had no immediate interaction.

Merran: Me, marginal? No immediate interaction? Oh, that’s funny. I can’t imagine not having a connection with you. We’ve been together for nearly twenty years now. When DID the story shift from to Tamara and me and all the others?  You didn’t start there, remember?

Sara: That’s true enough. I didn’t start there, not with the play I wrote for my friends and me to act out, and not with the stories that took off from there. Of course, the original characters were the voice of an overly dramatic adolescence and too many romance novels. Tamara and you were so much more sedate.

Merran (with a grin): I’m not sure I’d call our adventures sedate. I went through hell.

Sara: Well, what did it bring you? Peace, love, harmony. Joy. Everything you were looking for.

Merran: What about you? You ready to step back in and play with us some more?

Sara: Oh yes! I love playing in your reality. You ready for me to come in and channel some more of you?

Merran: Bring it on. You’re going to love what’s going on here in our world. (Extends a hand)

An Interview with Tamara Carrington

I first met Tamara Carrington many years ago, when exploring the new world I’d just begun to discover through my stories. A young woman, barely beyond adolescence, she captured my imagination and made me wonder just what made her tick. We discovered many things about each other in those years, including things I never would have imagined. Listening to her has been an amazing journey and I’m very glad to let her speak:  Tamara: We haven’t spoken in a while, have we?

Sara: No, but the best friendships are the ones that last no matter what happens. The connection is still there.

Tamara: That’s what they say. It feels right on, too. What was your favorite part to write about my life?

Sara: That would be giving out spoilers….but I’d say that you had a particular relationship with a particular person that was my favorite to write. You seemed happy in it, too.

Tamara: I am happy. Deliriously so, even if it took a while to get there. I was so volatile when I was younger! Everything seemed so much more…dramatic. Earth shaking! But richer, too, somehow. As if throwing myself into life was the only way to fully live.

Sara: Isn’t it?

Tamara (laughs): I could live without the emotional extremes. Committing to life doesn’t necessarily mean being a firecracker.

Sara: Does it have to mean anything? What if it could just be something we do without effort? What if living fully is our natural way of being and it takes effort to cut ourselves off?

Tamara: You sound like Greg. Or the aarya. Not that I ever really had much exposure to the aarya, but they don’t see reality the way the rest of us do.

Sara:  No, they don’t. It’s taken me a while before I could even hear what they had to tell me. I’m not sure I know even now.

Tamara: I’m not sure I want to know.

Sara: You’ve never liked the deeper stuff, have you?

Tamara: I don’t know about that. I’m more interested in things that you can hear and see and touch, yes, but there’s something to be said for the perceptions you get from the other awareness. We call it psi. Greg would know more than I would about the theories behind it all.

Sara: Yes, there will be more about it all, you can be sure about that.

Tamara: Good. I’d hate to be the only representative of the story. Thank you for writing about us, by the way. I’ve had fun and it’s great to share it with the world.

Sara: So have I! Tell me when you have other stories, by the way. I can hardly wait to see what they are!

It's HERE...The Book is Launching

So many changes since I last posted an update! It’s official…my book is launching tomorrow!! After a long journey and lots and lots of details I never knew went into publishing, I have finally reached that milestone…I am published! And Alawahea: The Azellian Affairs Book One is now fully birthed into this plane of existence. To help send this baby of mine on its way, I am also starting a blog tour this month. That means I will be visiting twenty  five or so different blogs over the next month, offering free excerpts, interviews and in general enjoying the wonderful and amazing writers/readers out there who are willing to feature Alawahea on their blogs. Such excitement! I can hardly wait to see how avid readers interact and play with the story.

I will be posting each week with updates on each of the stops. The possibilities are endless…I’m very excited to see how this all plays out! And for those of you who can be there, I look forward to seeing you at the launch. For those of you who can’t, you’ll be with us in spirit. Lots of love to all of you, and see you all in the world of Azelle!
